Making It Montreal

A view on English-speaking artists who chose to make Montreal home.

Through a series of events featuring discussions, readings, performances and exhibits, Anglophone artists of varied disciplines who moved to Montreal from elsewhere in adulthood will present their perspective on the city, their place in it and their decision to make it their home. These are people who, in short, decided to “make it” in Montreal and are also helping to “make” Montreal a more dynamic place.

Throughout 2010, this website will host interactive online discussions on this topic as well as interviews, podcasts, galleries and other material.

What's so special about English-speaking artists moving to Montreal?

Statistics indicate the Anglophone community in Quebec is older relative to the general population, sees more of its youth relocate elsewhere following the completion of studies and suffers higher unemployment than the Francophone community.

However, these statistics overlook the vibrant community of expatriate Anglophone artists of varying disciplines that have contributed to Montreal's growing reputation since the 1990s as a mecca for the arts, spawning numerous internationally renowned bands, writers, visual artists and other creatives.

By showcasing some of these individuals and exploring their thoughts on living here, this project aims to make both native and non-native Anglophone Montrealers feel more encouraged about the viability of pursuing a career in the arts in Montreal and help dispel the myth still prevalent among some Montrealers that success in the arts in English only comes to those who move elsewhere.

We hope you'll find this discussion interesting and also discover some of the great talents that make this community what it is. Please check in regularly on this site to find out about future events in this series and don't be shy about adding your thoughts to the interactive discussions that will stem from our blog posts.
